Architects

Following presentations on 26 July 2006, Kent County Council (KCC) appointed internationally renowned David Chipperfield Architects Limited to develop a new design for the gallery.

The final decision was made by KCC Cabinet Member for Communities Mike Hill following a recommendation from the selection panel which included key representatives from Arts Council England, KCC, South East England Development Agency, Tate, Thanet District Council, Turner Contemporary and the Turner Contemporary Development Trust.

David Chipperfield Architects Limited has a tremendous amount of experience of designing buildings for the public and cultural sector. Previous projects include America's Figge Art Museum, Germany's Museum of Modern Literature and the recently completed America's Cup pavilion in Valencia.

The practice has won over twenty national and international competitions and many international awards and citations for design excellence including the Royal Institute of British Architects, Royal Fine Arts Commission and the American Institute of Architects awards.

In 1999, David Chipperfield was awarded the Tessenow Gold Medal. In 2004 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to architecture and made Honorary Member of the Florence Academy of Art and Design.
